Self storage centres are the places where people keep their personal belongings or other goods that their house cannot accommodate. There are many kinds of store units available for rent in many Canadian cities. The rent varies depending on the location of the warehouse and facilities in it. When rental storehouses emerged as a viable business option, back in the 1960s and 1970s, the idea was to provide a store location. The quality of customer service and the facilities in the store unit were not major considerations. However, things changed drastically in the last two decades.

The Changing Business Scenario Of Rental Store Units

Up to 1990, the growth of self storage centres had been steady, but not spectacular by any means. In 1990s and the 2000s, the rate of growth became more frenetic, as rental store units mushroomed in major cities and important townships in the country. Renting out store units became an attractive real estate option. The rent went up as the real estate prices skyrocketed.

However, the current sub prime crisis and the resultant financial meltdown have stalled the exponential growth of the industry. The future does not look as rosy as it did ten years ago. Gone are the days in which a storeroom center would start attracting business automatically. There are two main aspects that can badly influence the rental storehouse business. The first is the economic recession and the rampant job losses. The second is the choices people have for store units. Major cities and towns have several storehouse businesses and customers have plenty of options to choose from.

However, as the old saying goes, the tough get going when the going gets tough. The store units that have devised and implemented good quality management procedures are likely to provide better customer service and display more efficiency in their work. This will definitely translate into customer satisfaction and in turn into business growth. Therefore, in a way, the recession is good in that it separates men from boys of the storehouse industry.

How To Improve Quality Management In Self Storage Centres

The two main aspects of a rental warehouse business are security of the store unit and the facilities therein. Most of the modern store units have a three-tier security system. First there will be a compound wall or fencing with a gate that facilitates both entry and exit. Second, there will be one or two security guards, who will physically verify the identity of the visitor. Then, there is the automated electronic security system that includes password-protected entry into individual units, closed circuit television cameras, and other modes of electronic surveillance. The security procedures are implemented in an optimum manner, which are effective, but not invasive and hazardous.

The second aspect is the quality of facilities. Nobody wants to keep their belongings in a shabby and untidy room. Therefore, the room should be clean and neat. In addition, the dealings with the customers have to be professional and cordial. For that, employees such as security guard and self storage centres managers should be made aware about quality management aspect.

Developing a check list of activities to be done on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis would help to improve the overall quality of the Toronto car storage or household warehouse centres. In addition, quality guidelines should be developed and implemented for specific situations, such as when a customer comes for enquiry or for storing items.
